Old Lviv Restaurant sits on a quiet stretch of W Chicago Ave, offering a straightforward and cozy space that feels like stepping into a familiar family kitchen rather than a typical city restaurant. This spot is all about delivering authentic Ukrainian flavors through a no-frills, buffet-style setup that’s perfect for anyone craving hearty, comforting food without fuss.

The atmosphere is modest and warm, with a clear focus on tradition over trendy decor. You’ll often find locals dropping by for lunch or early dinner, especially on weekdays, when the street parking is relatively easy. The seating is simple and unpretentious, encouraging a relaxed, communal vibe where the food takes center stage.

The buffet offers classic staples like borscht – both hot and cold varieties – which carries the rich, deep flavors that remind many of home-cooked meals from Eastern Europe. Varied pierogi options, from meat and potato to cheese, are tender and satisfying, alongside dishes like roast chicken and plov that anchor the spread. While the buffet service means that some items may not always be piping hot, the generous portions and true-to-recipe taste make it a worthwhile experience. Coffee and tea come at modest prices, making it easy to linger over your meal or warm up on a cool Chicago day.

Visitors looking for genuine Ukrainian hospitality will notice subtle cultural differences in service style – it’s straightforward and efficient rather than effusive, which some might interpret as reserved but is truly part of the authentic experience here. The efficient service respects your time without unnecessary chatter, keeping the focus on the food itself.

Old Lviv works best for those who appreciate honest, home-style Eastern European cooking and for anyone wanting to connect with a piece of Ukrainian tradition in Chicago’s West Side neighborhood. It’s particularly suited to solo diners, small groups, or anyone who appreciates a filling, affordable meal that carries a sense of place and heritage. Lunchtime visits on weekdays offer a practical and pleasant way to enjoy the food when the buffet is freshly stocked and the quiet street makes parking manageable.

Feels just like home! Old Lviv is a cozy spot with true Ukrainian hospitality and amazing food. Everything tastes authentic – the borscht is rich, the varenyky are tender, the meat dishes are juicy, and the desserts bring back childhood memories. You can really feel the love and tradition in every bite. It’s wonderful to experience a piece of Lviv here in Chicago. If you miss real Ukrainian food, this is the place to go!

Such a cute little spot for authentic Ukrainian food. Everything was good, the buffet items and the perogies!! Please support this place. Street parking was pretty easy when we visited during a weekday lunch. Everything is super cheap.

If you’re reading all of the one star reviews about the bad service, please understand the cultural differences between Eastern European and American culture. The service may feel cold, you might feel like you’re being a bother, you might want to leave, you won’t receive a smile, but never take it personal. Stay. I highly recommend you try the borscht, it’s the national dish of Ukraine and it’s a really well put together soup. We got the varenyky and it was decent. I wish they had a beef only option. The waitress gives complementary bread with butter, but I recommend saving the bread to dip in the soup. They also had a buffet but we didn’t try anything, food looked good though. Very clean and cozy seating area. Definitely a great place to try authentic Ukrainian food if you’ve never had it before.

Wow this place was delicious. The food is so comforting… great if you’re in need of something warm and yummy. We got the buffet and it was stocked full with food — from mashed potatoes to meat to staple Ukrainian dishes. The soup too was delicious. The staff was very friendly and attentive.

Had a wonderful experience here. I only wish I had the appetite to try even more things! My only teeny-tiny complaint is many of the food items could have been hotter, but hey it's a buffet and I went well after peak lunchtime, so I guess that's to be expected. But that didn't detract enough for me to lower the rating to 4 stars, it was that good! It felt like grandma cooked me a feast :)

One of the best meals I’ve had in Chicago! Every bite tasted lovingly made. It felt like being in someone’s home. Can’t wait until I can make it back to Chicago for another meal here!

Humble little place. I imagined it would be bigger. Only 5 tables / bar seating. The food on the buffet was outstanding Eastern European fare: cabbage rolls, kotleti, Nalysnyky, gravies, and so on. The Borscht was hot and delicious. There were no varenyky on the buffet, so we ordered some. Espresso drinks added a perk to the experience. 100% would recommend!

Very good. About $22/person for the buffet. Nice variety and everything is tasty and fresh. They take card and cash. There was about a 30 minute delay in opening the restaurant, so it was about 11:30, but the delicious food and cultural experience was well worth it.
